Italy implements EU Directive No. 2014/61/EU on measures to reduce the costs of deploying high-speed electronic communications networks On 10 March 2016, Italian Legislative Decree No. 33/2016 entered into force, which implemented EU Directive No. 2014/61/EU in Italy on measures to reduce the costs of deploying high-speed electronic communications networks. This Legislative Decree is aimed at promoting the deployment of ultrabroadband networks by way of various incentives. Some of the main provisions of this Legislative Decree concern, for instance, the prohibition to impose local taxes on operators that carry out works to deploy their networks; the encouragement to use innovative technologies for digging that have a low environmental impact; new rules on the access to networks and infrastructures; and the formation of a register containing a map of all high-speed electronic communications networks existing in Italy, and any other physical infrastructure which may be used to host them.
