From 1 July 2016, an international student must apply for a Single Student Visa (subclass 500), regardless of the course being applied for.

Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Requirement

With the introduction of the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement, it is important to seek legal advice before you lodge a Student Visa (subclass 500) application. Although genuineness was an important part of the student visa subclasses before the changes on 1 July 2016, it has now become a vital measure of the application’s integrity. This simply means that the applicant will have to convince the Case Officer that he or she really intends to study in Australia and is not using this visa as a ‘back door’ to get into the country. In order to satisfy this requirement, it is important to submit plenty of supporting documents that provide the Case Officer with indisputable evidence that your application is genuine, and that you intend to stay in Australia temporarily for the purpose of undertaking studies. The main requirements are:

  1. Enrolment
  • You must be enrolled in a course that is registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS); and
  • If you are applying from outside of Australia, you must include a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for each intended course with your application; a letter from your education provider will not suffice.
  1. Application Fees
  • The amount of your application fees depend on whether your application is made offshore or onshore. The standard application fee for the Student Visa is $550.00; and
  • If you are in Australia at the time of applying for the visa, you will incur a Subsequent Temporary Application charge of $700.00, which is in addition to the Student Visa application fee.

Applications made before 1 July 2016

These changes are not retrospective, that is, if you have already applied for a Student Visa with (subclass 570 to 576), your visa will remain valid and the visa conditions will not be subject to these changes.
