Prime Minister Tony Abbot delivered a speech at the National Press Club yesterday which touched on a number of tax issues including:

  • reconfirmation that the "bigger" Paid Parental Leave Scheme will not proceed, to be replaced with a better targeted scheme with a focus on childcare
  • a small business job package which will include a small business company tax cut on 1 July "at least as big as the 1.5 per cent already flagged" (no mention as to whether the 1.5 per cent tax rate reduction for all companies or the Paid Parental Leave Levy will still proceed)
  • discussion on the upcoming Tax Reform White Paper, and
  • a commitment that the GST base and rate will not change unless there is political consensus.
