India’s federal telecommunications regulator announced January 13 that it has issued directives to mobile service providers to disclose the carbon footprints of their networks twice a year and ensure that at least 50 percent of all mobile telecom towers in rural areas and at least 20 percent in urban areas are powered by a mix of renewable and grid-connected power by 2015. The target will increase to 75 percent in rural areas and 33 percent in urban areas by 2020. All telecom products, equipments, and services would have a Green Passport based on energy consumption ratings by 2015, and efforts would be made to green the entire network.
