The Federal Communications Commission announced that Chairman Tom Wheeler has circulated a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to the Commission outlining proposed rules for broadband Internet access service (BIAS) providers related to how they use, share, and safeguard customer data.  The announcement says customer privacy and security protections are needed because BIAS providers “can collect their customers’ personal and private information to create detailed profiles about their lives.”  According to the announcement, which summarizes the NPRM, the proposal includes provisions requiring BIAS providers to give customers more choice and transparency over whether and how their data is used, as well as to ensure customer data is secure.
