Further to our blog posts of here, here and here, Village Roadshow has announced yesterday that it has filed proceedings in the Federal Court seeking to have the website ‘Solar Movie’ blocked under the website blocking legislation. The Copyright Amendment (Online Infringement) Act 2015 was passed by the Senate on 22 June 2015, however this case represents the first case of its kind under that legislation.
The legislation allows rights holders to apply to a Federal Court judge to have overseas websites blocked if they are deemed to have the primary purpose of facilitating copyright infringement.
Solar Movie is a website that many view as allowing and facilitating users to illegally stream movies and television shows.
Village Roadshow has indicated that it will also target a number of similar sites in the future.
It has also been reported that Foxtel are considering launching their own similar case today against the well-known website, the ‘Pirate Bay’.
