The term of office of works council members has been extended from 4 to 5 years. The annual entitlement to special training leave for works council members has also been extended from 3 weeks to 3 weeks and 3 days. This is applicable for works councils established (or re-elected) as of 1 January 2017.

The protection of older employees against termination pursuant to Sec 105 para 3b ArbVG (stricter requirements for termination of elderly employees) will no longer be applicable for employees who are 50+ at the time of hiring if their employment relationship starts after 1 July 2017.
