The Government of British Columbia has announced that the new Societies Act will become effective November 28, 2016. A copy of the Act can be found here: The New Societies Act. For highlights of the new Act, see our bulletin of April 24, 2015, New Societies Act Tabled in B.C. Legislature.

At the same time, the government published implementing regulations which will take effect on the same date. The new Societies Regulation provides, among other things, rules for:

  • the names of societies;
  • reporting on the remuneration of directors, employees, and contractors;
  • member-funded societies; and
  • fees.

Further, the regulations include model bylaws for societies.

Starting November 28, 2016, societies will have two years to transition to the new legislation. For a summary of the transition process, see our bulletin dated May 26, 2015, The New British Columbia Societies Act: What Happens Next?

It is expected that transition packages will be made available by the end of August 2016.
