The Court of Appeal today dismissed the appeal by Mirror Group against the High Court judgment awarding very substantial damages to a representative group of Claimants for phone hacking.

This confirms the high benchmark set by Mr Justice Mann for compensation for such claims going forward. There are many still to be settled against both Mirror Group and News UK.

The awards are significantly higher than most settlements made earlier by News UK and awards made in the News International Compensation Scheme, so it is going to increase the financial burden on the newspaper groups who have not yet compensated victims.

The question for the court was whether the judge was reasonable in making the awards and it has decided he was. The Court highlighted the exceptional nature of the claims and had regard to the wide circulation of the private information to a very large number of people. It touched upon the most intimate part of the lives of some of the Claimants and understandably caused great distress.
