Also on April 14, the European Parliament approved the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).  The GDPR will replace the current Data Protection Directive, which was adopted in 1995 and took effect in 1998.  The European Parliament’s approval was the last step in its formal adoption; it will now be published in the EU Official Journal (likely in May), enter into force 20 days thereafter, and take effect two years after that date.
