The only remaining Democrat on the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO), Steven Lesser’s term expires April 10, 2015, and the PUCO is accepting applications for the seat now through January 8, 2015, Gongwer reports. Lesser, who was appointed by former Governor Ted Strickland in 2010, has not yet publicly announced whether he will seek reappointment. The 12-member PUCO Nominating Council will interview selected candidates on January 22, 2015 before recommending four finalists to Governor John Kasich, who will then have 30 days to “either appoint a commissioner from the list or request a new list from the Nominating Council.” No more than three members of the same political party may sit on the commission at the same time according to state law; however, Chairman Tom Johnson and Commissioner Lynn Slaby are the only two official GOP (Republican) members currently on the commission, so the governor could appoint a Republican to fill the seat. The other two members, Asim Haque and Beth Trombold, “are not currently registered with either party.”
