The owner of a fitness studio in Arizona recently learned that being a professional athlete is not a guarantee of honest and ethical behavior. Former NBA player Chris Gatling has been charged with fraud, forgery and aggravated identity theft for running a credit card scam through the fitness studio. According to officials, he convinced the owner to run various credit card numbers through the studio’s account and offered to give her a 10% cut of the proceeds. When the charges began bouncing back, the authorities looked into it.

Often, people can lose their common sense around public figures – even journeyman basketball players. As this case illustrates, it is always important to keep a level head and be appropriately suspicious of a deal that sounds too good to be true.
