The Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) has introduced the concept of the registration agent in order to further streamline the issuance of legal entity identifiers (LEIs). A registration agent assists legal entities to access the network of LEI issuing organisations responsible for performing LEI issuance and related services and acts as a third-party service provider that assists the LEI issuing organisation with the performance of its duties in the global LEI system. Registration agents will not, however, be responsible for issuing LEIs and LEI issuing organisations remain fully responsible and liable to GLEIF for the execution of their duties. The Financial Stability Board established GLEIF in June 2014 to support the implementation and use of the LEI.
