The United Auto Workers (UAW) is enlisting the help of a member of the French National Assembly in its drive to organize a Nissan assembly plant in Canton, Miss. Member Christian Hutin has asked the French government to use its 20 percent stake in Renault, which in turn has an alliance with and a 43.4 percent stake in Nissan, to assist with the unionization efforts. Renault employees recently staged a demonstration in Paris in support of Nissan’s Canton employees.

Despite Law360’s efforts to counter organization efforts, its editorial staff has voted for representation by the NewsGuild of New York. The newly-established bargaining unit will include approximately 130 editorial staff members, and hopes to address wages, story quotas, and unilateral changes to employee benefits.

Graduate students at Yale University have petitioned the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for representation elections with UNITE HERE Local 33. The students filed separate petitions covering 10 different departments at the university.

Norwegian Air flight attendants based in the U.S. voted for representation by the Norwegian Cabin Crew Association. The vote came after a year of disputes over whether the union had collected enough qualification cards to qualify for an election.

NewsGuild-CWA won a representation vote at the Lakeland, Fla.-based Ledger newspaper. NewsGuild will represent the newspaper’s 25 staff members.

White-collar union membership continues to grow. From 2005 to 2015, the proportion of union-represented employees in white-collar jobs rose to 55 percent. Overall union membership fell six percent during the same period.
