After months of negotiations and various failed proposals, President Obama, House Speaker John Boehner, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced late on Sunday, July 31st, that they had reached an agreement to raise the federal government’s debt ceiling, just two days ahead of the deadline set by Treasury Secretary Geithner in order to avoid the nation’s first ever default.
