CFIUS blocks Chinese investment in US mining company *

In December 2009, Northwest Nonferrous International Investment Company Limited, a Chinese entity, abandoned its planned acquisition of Firstgold Corporation, a US gold mining company, as a result of a decision by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to recommend that President Obama block the transaction.

House, Senate pass similar bills expanding economic sanctions against Iran *

On January 28, 2010, the Senate passed the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability and Divestment Act (S. 2799) by voice vote. S. 2799 would, among other things, expand the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) to impose penalties on non-US companies that participate in Iranian petroleum refining and importation.

Chemical engineer jailed for Iran OFAC violations *

On January 12, 2010, a federal grand jury sentenced Dr. Ali Amirnazmi, a chemical engineer, to four years in prison and five years of supervised release for fraud and conspiracy in connection with illegal payments to Iranian businesses and institutions in violation of US trade sanctions.

On January 8, 2010, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested Mahmoud Reza Banki after an indictment charging him with violating the US sanctions on Iran and operating an unlicensed money transfer business between the United States and Iran.
