CMS and ONC propose eligibility standards for electronic health record incentives *

Enacted as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act) establishes financial incentives for hospitals, physicians, and other health care providers that meaningfully use certified electronic health records (EHR) technology between 2011 and 2015 (through 2016 under the Medicaid incentive program), and penalties for hospitals and physicians that fail to meet such standards beginning in 2015.
