The Minister for Justice and Law Reform has issued a Commencement Order in relation to Section 14 of the Intoxicating Liquor Act 2008 which gives the Gardai powers to send persons under the age of 18 years into licensed premises for the purposes of carrying out "test purchases" of alcohol.

On Wednesday, the High Court ruled that a retractable canvas awning was a "roof" within the meaning of the Public Health (Control of Tobacco) Acts and therefore in breach of the smoking ban.

Speaking last night at a dinner hosted by The Irish Field, Taoiseach Brian Cowen flagged that internet, telephone and other forms of remote betting would be brought into the tax net as part of putting in place a sustainable system for the support of Ireland's Horse and Greyhound Racing Industry.
